What is KanaPro 2.0?

KanaPro 2.0 is the fast and easy way to learn the Hiragana and Katakana Japanese writing systems. Designed as a replacement for the flash card method of memorization, KanaPro uses a two-stage approach. In the first stage, students are presented with a Roomaji table of all the Japanese phonemes. When the student selects a phoneme, KanaPro displays the corresponding Kana. KanaPro shows the student still images of each stroke for each Hiragana and Katakana character. In addition, at the click of a button, an animation is played showing the selected Kana being drawn. This helps the student to visualize the correct strokes for drawing the Kana.

In the second stage, the drill and practice stage, KanaPro displays a Kana, and the student tries to select the proper Roomaji phoneme from the same chart. KanaPro takes a self-paced approach to learning the Japanese Kana. Students traditionally start out by learning the first 10 or so Kana, and over time add more to this initial list. KanaPro allows the student to limit quizzing to a subset of all the Kana at first, and to include more as the student learns more. In this way, KanaPro can be an invaluable supplement to classroom instruction.

Separate modules for Hiragana and Katakana are included with KanaPro 2.0, and their "look-and-feel" are identical, so students can concentrate on learning the Kana.

KanaPro 2.0 has been extensively field tested by undergraduate and graduate students of Japanese, and is endorsed by Dr. Shoko Hamano, Assistant Professor of Japanese at The George Washington University.

Demo Version

You can download a demo version of KanaPro 2.0.
This version has the same functionality as the full version, but limits the number of Kana to 10 Hiragana and 10 Katakana.

Supported Computer Platforms

KanaPro 2.0 is currently available for the Windows platform.
Windows 95/98/00/Me/XP and Windows 3.1 (with Win32s) systems are all supported.

Cost and Ordering

KanaPro 2.0 is designed for use at home by students, but can also be used in language labs. The cost of KanaPro is $19.95 plus shipping and handling for a single-user license, and comes on a single CD. Site-licensing is also available.

If you are using KanaPro 2.0 on a Windows 3.1 platform, you will need a copy of win32s, which allows Windows 3.1 to run 32-bit applications.
